As some of you know, Skeena Pacific relocated its headquarters to the sunny Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. The nearest mainline railway is Canadian Pacific, about 100 kilometers to the north. That's where I got to on Wednesday October 7th, and a location I had wanted to video for sometime. This is the north track of CP's Shuswap Subdivision at about Mile 77. This loop in the railway was built in 1981 to ease the grade on the CPR mainline over Notch Hill. Heavy westbound freight trains use this gentler 1% track, while eastbound trains continue to use the original, steeper track just to the south. CP Trains 301 and 309 are loaded grain trains headed west to the Port of Vancouver, BC. I heard the radio chatter and was very surprised when, not only 301 showed up, but 309 came hard on its heels. This video is a continuous shot of both trains attacking the 1% grade. CP9681 leads CP8889 on Train 301, with Union Pacific UP5800 pushing at the rear. CP Train 309 is longer and has CP8838 and CP8128 up front with CP8840 mid-train and CP9806 at the rear. If you go to Google, select Maps and paste in 50°51'09.7"N 119°22'30.8"W you'll see the location of the cameras for this video. Recorded with a Canon XA55 4KHD Pro video camera at 1920x1080 resolution. For outdoor shooting, it is equipped with an Azden SMX-10 High-Performance Stereo Condenser Microphone mounted inside a Rode Blimp Windshield on a Rycote Shock Mount Suspension System. A Neewer NW74K 7-Inch 1920x1080 Field Monitor is also used . All equipment is then mounted on a custom bar attached to a Canadian Studio Pro Heavy Duty 72" Tripod with an EI-717 Fluid Pan Head. Video is edited, produced and rendered using Cyberlink PowerDirector 17 Ultimate. Where provided, information regarding locomotive types, build and other data are from the '2020 Canadian Trackside Guide' published by (and available from) the Bytown Railway Society Inc., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Some information is also obtained from https://rac.jmaponline.net/canadianrailatlas/ N.B.The photographer and cameras did not encroach on the railway right-of-way in taking this video. It is dangerous, foolhardy (and illegal) to enter on railway rights-of-way. Just sayin' ... "You don't stand on a runway to watch airplanes." Skeena Pacific is a supporter of the Operation Lifesaver Canada. Operation Lifesaver (OL) is dedicated to preventing collisions at railway crossings and railway trespassing incidents in Canada. They believe the key to achieving this goal is public education. Operation Lifesaver in Canada is funded by the Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada, working with the rail industry, governments, law enforcement, labour groups, the media, and other organizations and communities from coast to coast to increase awareness about rail safety—because rail safety is a shared responsibility. https://www.operationlifesaver.ca/ Music Attribution(closing titles): Boston Tones - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b/3.0/0 This video and audio material may not be reproduced in any form (except as an embedded video on any other website), without written permission.
